MOSCOW — 1995 · Unsolved Case
The Assassination of Vladislav Listyev
Vladislav Listyev, one of Russia's best-known television figures and newly appointed head of the ORT channel, was shot dead in the stairwell of his Moscow apartment building on the evening of 1 March 1995. His death shocked a country where programmes such as "Vzglyad" and "Pole Chudes" had brought him millions of viewers; the next day ORT and several other channels went off air for the whole day in an unprecedented protest. It was suggested that the killing might be linked to his reorganisation of the channel's advertising revenue. Although investigators repeatedly claimed to be close to a breakthrough, neither the gunmen nor those who ordered the killing were ever found; the case remains unsolved.
