MOSCOW — 2015 · Murder
The Assassination of Boris Nemtsov
Russian opposition leader and former deputy prime minister Boris Nemtsov was shot in the back late on 27 February 2015 while walking across the Bolshoy Moskvoretsky Bridge beside the Kremlin, two days before a planned march against the war in Ukraine. Five Chechen men were tried; in June 2017 a jury convicted all five, and the former soldier identified as the gunman received 20 years while the others received 11 to 19 years. Nemtsov's family and supporters stressed that whoever ordered the killing has never been identified. The bridge became a long-running memorial site.
