Murder of Paul Klebnikov

UnsolvedSources: BLast updated: 14 October 2026

Paul Klebnikov, the American editor of the Russian edition of Forbes, was shot dead as he left his Moscow office on the night of 9 July 2004. He was known for his investigations into Russian business and organised crime. Prosecutors described the killing as a contract murder and tried two men and an alleged accomplice, but in May 2006 a jury acquitted all of them. Russia's Supreme Court overturned the acquittals, yet the case produced no result. Press freedom groups have long stressed that those who ordered the killing have never been identified, and the case is still regarded as unsolved.
