UnsolvedSources: CLast updated: 14 October 2026

On 15 July 2009, human rights worker Natalia Estemirova was abducted outside her home in Grozny, Chechnya; her body was found the same day in a neighboring district. Estemirova had spent years documenting human rights abuses in the region. The investigation produced no results. In 2021, the European Court of Human Rights ruled that Russia had failed to conduct an adequate investigation into the case, establishing state responsibility. Those responsible and whoever ordered the killing were never legally identified.
