BAKU — 2005 · Unsolved Case
Assassination of Journalist Elmar Huseynov
Elmar Huseynov, who founded the opposition weekly Monitor in 1995 and served as its editor-in-chief, was shot dead outside his apartment building in Baku on the evening of 2 March 2005. The 37-year-old journalist was known for writing critically about the authorities and corruption, and his magazine had repeatedly faced lawsuits and attempts to shut it down. The killing provoked a strong reaction at home and among international press organisations, and the OSCE among others called for the perpetrators to be found. Although an investigation continued, years later nobody had been tried or punished for the murder. The case remains one of the emblematic press-freedom files in Azerbaijan.
