Background
Sedat Ünal lived in the Kocasinan district of Kayseri. On 23 November 2008 his body was found by the roadside near Karakaya village, in the Ürgüp district of Nevşehir. According to published reports, he had left home that evening and gone to a venue in Kayseri's Melikgazi district where illegal gambling was said to take place.
The file stayed among the unsolved killings for eighteen years.
What happened
The autopsy found that Ünal died of brain and internal bleeding caused by blows to the head and chest. A report from the Ankara Criminal Police Laboratory said biological traces not belonging to him were found on his coat. At the time those traces could not be matched with a suspect, and the investigation ended without a result.
That the scene was in Ürgüp while the victim lived in Kayseri meant the file touched two provinces' jurisdictions.
The victim's relatives spent years trying to learn what happened after he left home that night. Records from the time include searches, witness statements and reports on the first discovery by the roadside, but they did not reach the completeness needed for an indictment.
Investigation and legal process
The Unsolved Crimes Research Department, created within the Justice Ministry, reviewed the file again. Gendarmerie and JASAT teams in Nevşehir and Ürgüp re-assessed the old forensic and laboratory findings, DNA data and phone records. According to news reports, one suspect's phone line signalled first in the area of the venue and then in the area where the body was left.
On 11 September 2026 simultaneous operations took place in Nevşehir, Kayseri and Antalya and seven people were detained. Of those referred to court, four were arrested and three were released under judicial supervision. The names and initials reported differ between sources, so no names are given here. The accusations against those arrested remain allegations until a court rules.
The reopening is part of the ministry's review of old files.
Where it stands today
The Sedat Ünal file shows that biological and technical evidence collected years ago can gain meaning through later reassessment. While the process continues, the presumption of innocence applies to all suspects. Dark Location presents this page in Sedat Ünal's memory and to draw attention to similar files that have waited years for answers. For families, the ultimate hope is that the events are laid out fully in court.
