The Cầu Voi Post Office Murders (Hồ Duy Hải Case)

ClosedSources: ALast updated: 14 October 2026

On the night of 13 January 2008, two young women working at the Cầu Voi post office in Thủ Thừa District, Long An Province, were found murdered. Hồ Duy Hải, arrested in March 2008, confessed and was sentenced to death in 2008; the sentence was upheld on appeal in 2009. But he and his family maintained the confession had been obtained under pressure, and it emerged that some evidence from the scene had been lost and examinations were incomplete. His execution was halted at the last moment in 2014. The Supreme People's Procuracy protested the verdict in November 2019, but on 8 May 2020 the Supreme People's Court, while acknowledging procedural errors, upheld the death sentence. The case remains central to debates on judicial reform in Vietnam.
