HO CHI MINH CITY — 2000 · Murder
The Năm Cam Case
Known as the "Godfather of Saigon", Năm Cam ran a criminal empire in Ho Chi Minh City built on gambling dens, loan sharking and extortion. His rival Dung Hà, a gang leader from the north who tried to set up her own operation in the city, was shot dead by two men on a motorbike on 2 October 2000. Investigators established that Năm Cam had ordered the killing, and the case exposed a web of bribery reaching police officers, prosecutors and state officials who had protected him. In 2003, in Vietnam's largest criminal trial with 155 defendants, he and four of his men were sentenced to death and several senior officials were jailed. He was executed in June 2004.
