The Murder of the Mayor of Fago

SolvedSources: BLast updated: 14 October 2026

Miguel Grima, mayor of the tiny village of Fago in the Aragonese Pyrenees, disappeared on 12 January 2007 while returning from a regional meeting; the next day he was found shot dead in a ravine. In the village of fewer than thirty inhabitants, deep disputes had long existed between the mayor and some residents. The investigation focused on a forest ranger living in the village, found to have harboured strong animosity towards the mayor. He first confessed, then retracted and claimed innocence. In 2009 the Huesca Provincial Court sentenced him to 20 years and 9 months in prison, and the Supreme Court upheld the ruling. The case became the subject of series and documentaries about conflict in small communities.
