The Hanoi Mini-Apartment Fire

ClosedSources: BLast updated: 14 October 2026

On the night of 12 September 2023 a fire broke out in a nine-storey "mini-apartment" block on a narrow alley off Khương Hạ street in Hanoi's Thanh Xuân district. Around 150 people lived in the building, which had a single staircase and inadequate escape routes, and the narrow lane hampered fire engines. Fifty-six people died and dozens were injured. Officials said the fire started from an electrical short circuit in the ground-floor parking area. It was Vietnam's deadliest residential fire since 2002 and triggered nationwide inspections of mini-apartments. In March 2025 the building's owner was sentenced to 12 years in prison for breaching fire safety rules.
