HOHHOT — 1996 · Murder
The Huugjilt Case — Exonerated 18 Years After Execution
On 9 April 1996, a woman's body was found in the toilet of a textile factory in Hohhot, capital of Inner Mongolia. Huugjilt, an 18-year-old factory worker who had found the body and reported it to police, was detained as a suspect and tried on the basis of a confession obtained within 48 hours. Sentenced to death on 23 May 1996, he was executed on 10 June 1996. In 2005, another man who had been arrested confessed to this murder as well. After a long legal struggle, the Inner Mongolia High People's Court posthumously exonerated Huugjilt on 15 December 2014 and apologised to his family. The real perpetrator was sentenced to death in 2015, and 27 officials were sanctioned for failures in the investigation.
