The Assassination of Sanjaasürengiin Zorig — The Night Before a Premiership

Under InvestigationSources: ALast updated: 14 October 2026

Sanjaasürengiin Zorig, one of the leading figures of Mongolia's 1990 democratic revolution, was killed in his apartment in Ulaanbaatar on the night of 2 October 1998. Zorig was then minister of infrastructure and was expected to be announced as the candidate for prime minister within days. Because it targeted a symbol of the country's democratic transition, the assassination deeply shook Mongolia. The case remained unsolved for about 18 years. In December 2016, three people were found guilty in closed hearings and sentenced to 24-25 years in prison; the appeals court upheld the verdict in March 2017. The secrecy of the trial drew criticism, and in December 2017 the government declassified 14,926 pages of the case file. The mastermind of the assassination has still not been identified.
