Nie Shubin Case — Exonerated After Execution
In 1994 a woman was murdered near Shijiazhuang, capital of Hebei province. Nie Shubin, 20, who had been seen cycling near the scene, was arrested, sentenced to death for murder and rape, and executed on 27 April 1995. In 2005 another man confessed to the crime. After his mother's years-long campaign, China's Supreme People's Court reheard the case and in December 2016 ruled that the original trial lacked sufficient objective evidence, citing serious doubts about the time of death, the weapon and the cause of death. Nie Shubin was acquitted 21 years after his execution.
