The Novi Sad Railway Station Canopy Collapse

Under InvestigationSources: ALast updated: 14 October 2026

At 11:52 a.m. on 1 November 2024, the concrete canopy over the entrance of Novi Sad's recently renovated railway station collapsed. Fourteen people died; two of the seriously injured died in the following months, bringing the toll to 16. Built in 1964, the station had undergone extensive renovation in 2021–2024; experts pointed to corrosion in load-bearing elements, while the role of the renovation work was disputed. In December 2024, 13 people including a former minister were indicted, though some charges were later dropped and the matter is before the appeals court. The disaster sparked Serbia's largest protests since 2000 and led to the prime minister's resignation in January 2025.
