Velika Ivanča Massacre

ClosedSources: BLast updated: 14 October 2026

In the early hours of 9 April 2013, in the village of Velika Ivanča in the Mladenovac municipality, about 50 km southeast of Belgrade, a 60-year-old man went from house to house, opening fire in five homes within half an hour. Thirteen people were killed, including his own mother, his son and a two-year-old child; most victims were his relatives or neighbours. He then shot himself and his wife; she survived with injuries, while he died in hospital two days later. He had no criminal record or known psychiatric history; he had fought in the wars of the 1990s and lost his job a year earlier, but the motive was never established. Serbia declared national mourning.
