RUSE — 2018 · Murder
The Viktoria Marinova Case
Viktoria Marinova, 30, a director and presenter at the local TVN channel in Ruse, was found dead in early October 2018 in a riverside park by the Danube popular with walkers and joggers. Because she had just launched an investigative programme examining allegations involving EU funds, fears that the killing was linked to her work drew wide international attention. A 21-year-old suspect who had fled to Germany was arrested there on 10 October 2018 and extradited to Bulgaria. Prosecutors said the attack was a random, sexually motivated crime unrelated to journalism. The perpetrator pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 30 years in prison in April 2019.
