BRAȘOV — 2007 · Murder
The Elodia Ghinescu Case
Lawyer Elodia Ghinescu disappeared from her home in Brașov at the end of August 2007. In what became the most heavily covered missing-person case in Romanian media history, her husband, a police officer, long remained the only suspect. Ghinescu was declared legally dead by a court in February 2009. DNA analysis showing that blood traces found in the couple's home and on several objects were hers changed the course of the case. Her husband was arrested in December 2012 and sentenced to 22 years for murder in July 2013; the sentence became final in 2014. He has continued to maintain his innocence. Her body was never found, making it one of Romania's rare murder convictions without a body.
