1967 Kayseri Stadium Disaster

ClosedSources: ALast updated: 14 October 2026

During the Kayserispor–Sivasspor match at Kayseri's Atatürk Stadium on 17 September 1967, tension in the stands and on the pitch rose after Kayserispor scored in the 20th minute. Rival fans began throwing stones at each other, and spectators fleeing the violence caused a crush at the stand exits. Because the gates opened inwards, many people were trapped and died. Forty-three people were killed and at least 300 injured. Rioting followed in Kayseri and days of unrest in Sivas. Inadequate security was seen as a key factor. The disaster is remembered as the deadliest sports-related tragedy in Turkey. Together with the unrest that followed, the disaster remained a sensitive issue between the two cities for many years.
