SAKARYA — 1967 · Major Tragedy
The 1967 Mudurnu Valley Earthquake: Adapazarı Shaken
At 18:56 on the evening of 22 July 1967, a magnitude 6.8 earthquake struck the Mudurnu Valley section of the North Anatolian Fault. Also known as the 'Adapazarı earthquake', most of its deaths occurred in Sakarya province, where many wooden houses in Adapazarı, Akyazı, Geyve and Sapanca were completely destroyed. Sources put the death toll at between 83 and 89, and more than 7,000 buildings were damaged. In Istanbul the historic Vezirhan partly collapsed, killing one person. Deaths were kept relatively limited partly because the quake struck in the evening, when many people were outdoors. The quake is seen as one link in the chain of large earthquakes that began with the 1939 Erzincan quake and migrated westward along the North Anatolian Fault.
