PORTSEA — 1967 · Missing Person
Disappearance of Prime Minister Harold Holt
Australian Prime Minister Harold Holt went swimming in rough seas at Cheviot Beach near Portsea, Victoria, on 17 December 1967 and was never seen again. One of the largest search operations in the country's history followed, but his body was never found. The disappearance of a sitting prime minister gave rise to numerous conspiracy theories. In 2005 the Victorian State Coroner ruled at an inquest that Holt had accidentally drowned off Cheviot Beach, matching the conclusion of the 1967 police investigation.
