SYDNEY — 1975 · Missing Person
Disappearance of Juanita Nielsen
Journalist and activist Juanita Nielsen used NOW, the independent newspaper she published in Sydney's Kings Cross, to campaign against the demolition of historic terraces on Victoria Street for high-rise development. On 4 July 1975 she was last seen after reportedly visiting the Carousel Club to discuss advertising; a week later her handbag was found beside a freeway in Western Sydney. A 1983 inquest found she had probably been killed but that there was insufficient evidence of how or by whom, noting that the police investigation had been affected by an atmosphere of corruption. NSW Police announced a $1 million reward in 2021.
