NGONG — 1975 · Unsolved Case
The Murder of J. M. Kariuki
Josiah Mwangi Kariuki ('J.M.'), a popular Kenyan MP critical of the government, disappeared on 2 March 1975 after leaving the Hilton Hotel in Nairobi. His body was found by a herder in the Ngong Forest; he had been shot. A parliamentary select committee recommended investigating several people, including senior police officers, and the report was allegedly purged of certain names. No one was ever prosecuted or punished. The murder remains a landmark case in Kenyan debates on political violence and state accountability; the 50th anniversary of his death was marked in 2025.
