SAN FELICE CIRCEO — 1975 · Murder
The Circeo Massacre
At the end of September 1975, three young men from wealthy Roman families took two young women they had met to a villa in San Felice Circeo on the Lazio coast. The women were held for about 36 hours and subjected to severe violence; one died, while the other survived by pretending to be dead. They were found in the boot of a car parked in Rome. In July 1976 the three perpetrators were sentenced to life imprisonment; one fled abroad before capture, another escaped from prison, and the third killed again years later while on day release. The case became a turning point in Italy's debate on treating sexual violence as a crime against the person.
