The Execution of Che Guevara

ClosedSources: ALast updated: 14 October 2026

Argentine-born revolutionary Ernesto 'Che' Guevara, a leading figure of the Cuban Revolution, began a guerrilla campaign in Bolivia in 1966. Pursued by the US-backed Bolivian army, his small band was cornered in the Quebrada del Yuro ravine in October 1967 and Guevara was captured wounded. Held in the schoolhouse of the nearby village of La Higuera, he was summarily executed on 9 October 1967 on the orders of the Bolivian government. His body was displayed to the press in Vallegrande and then secretly buried. His remains were found only in 1997, returned to Cuba and interred in the memorial at Santa Clara. The former schoolhouse at La Higuera is now a museum.
