The Ahmet Demir case — a murder outside the courthouse

On 7 January 2020, outside the Kayseri courthouse, 40-year-old Ahmet Demir, a lawyer's former client, was shot and killed by the lawyer's father. An argument between the defendant and the victim outside the courthouse had turned into a physical fight, during which the defendant drew a gun from his waistband and opened fire. The first trial resulted in a 24-year prison sentence, but the Court of Cassation overturned that ruling. In the retrial, the court convicted the defendant of 'premeditated intentional homicide' and sentenced him to aggravated life imprisonment; a good-conduct reduction was applied, converting the sentence to ordinary life imprisonment.
