LONDON — 1953 · Serial Murder
The 10 Rillington Place Murders
In March 1953, shortly after former tenant John Christie moved out of 10 Rillington Place in Notting Hill, London, new occupants found women's bodies in a wallpapered-over kitchen alcove. Further remains turned up in the garden and under the floorboards; Christie had killed at least eight people, including his wife. He was convicted of his wife's murder and hanged on 15 July 1953. The case also exposed one of the gravest miscarriages of justice in English history: Timothy Evans, who had lived in the same house, had been convicted largely on Christie's evidence and hanged in 1950. Evans received a posthumous pardon in 1966, and the case was pivotal in the debate that led Britain to abolish capital punishment.
