LONDON — 1983 · Serial Murder
The Muswell Hill Murders
In February 1983 a plumber called to clear a blocked drain at a house in Cranley Gardens, Muswell Hill, north London, found human remains. The top-floor tenant, a former civil servant, was arrested on 9 February 1983. He admitted killing at least 12 young men, many of them homeless or isolated, between 1978 and 1983, first at a flat in Cricklewood and then in Muswell Hill. At a trial that began in October 1983 he was convicted of six murders and two attempted murders and jailed for life. He died in prison in 2018. The case also raised questions about police indifference to missing young men.
