LONDON — 2017 · Major Tragedy
The Grenfell Tower Fire
On the night of 14 June 2017 a fire that started in a flat in the 24-storey Grenfell Tower in west London spread rapidly via combustible exterior cladding and engulfed the building, killing 72 people. The public inquiry led by retired judge Sir Martin Moore-Bick published its final report in September 2024, concluding that the deaths were avoidable and blaming decades of government failure, regulatory indifference and the 'systematic dishonesty' of some building-product manufacturers. A police investigation continues. The fire transformed building-safety law in England.
