LONDON — 1993 · Murder
The Stephen Lawrence Case
On 22 April 1993 Stephen Lawrence, an 18-year-old Black student, was stabbed to death in a racist attack by a group of youths while waiting for a bus in Eltham, south-east London. The first investigation failed and a private prosecution by his family ended in acquittals. The 1999 Macpherson Report found 'institutional racism' in the Metropolitan Police. New forensic evidence led to the conviction of two men for murder in January 2012; the other attackers have never been convicted. The case is regarded as a turning point for policing and race relations in Britain.
