TORVAIANICA — 1953 · Suspicious Death
The Death of Wilma Montesi
Wilma Montesi, a 21-year-old Roman, left home on 9 April 1953; her body was found on 11 April on the beach at Torvaianica near Rome. The first official explanation was accidental drowning, but press allegations linked the death to parties in Roman high society and to relatives of politicians. The naming of the Foreign Minister's son turned it into a major political scandal, and the minister resigned in 1954. A three-year investigation produced hundreds of witnesses and more than ninety volumes of files. At the 1957 trial in Venice all defendants were acquitted. How Montesi died, and whether anyone else was involved, was never conclusively established.
