The Plane Crash of Enrico Mattei

UnsolvedSources: ALast updated: 14 October 2026

Enrico Mattei, founder of the Italian state oil company ENI, was one of the most powerful Italians of his time, with deals that challenged the dominance of the major Western oil companies. On the evening of 27 October 1962, his small jet, flying from Catania in Sicily to Milan's Linate Airport, crashed near the village of Bascapè in Lombardy; Mattei, his pilot and an American journalist were killed. The official investigation closed the case as an accident. When the inquiry was reopened in 1994, traces of an explosion were found on exhumed remains and pieces of wreckage, and the judge reclassified the case as murder by persons unknown. Who was responsible has never been established. The disappearance without trace in 1970 of journalist Mauro De Mauro, who was researching the case, deepened the mystery.
