RIMINI — 2004 · Suspicious Death
The Death of Marco Pantani
Cyclist Marco Pantani, who won both the Giro d'Italia and the Tour de France in 1998, was found dead on 14 February 2004 in his room at the Residence Le Rose hotel in Rimini. He was known to have struggled with depression after his expulsion from the 1999 Giro amid doping suspicions. The first autopsy attributed his death to a drug overdose. Following a private investigation commissioned by his family and media claims, Rimini prosecutors reopened the file in 2014 as a possible murder; a new forensic review attributed the death to an overdose of antidepressants and cocaine, and the murder claim was dismissed as conjecture. His family has continued to press for further inquiries in later years.
