BOSTON — 1962 · Serial Murder
The Boston Strangler
Between June 1962 and January 1964, thirteen women were killed in their own homes in the Greater Boston area; most lived alone, and there were no signs of forced entry. The killings caused widespread panic, and police and state officials formed a special task force. A man arrested for other crimes confessed to the murders but was never tried for them; he was convicted of other offences in 1967 and killed in prison in 1973. The reliability of his confession was debated for decades. In July 2013, DNA analysis linked the man who had confessed to the final victim, but whether all the murders were committed by the same person remains disputed.
