The Boston Marathon Bombing

SolvedSources: ALast updated: 14 October 2026

On 15 April 2013, near the finish line of the 117th Boston Marathon, two homemade bombs left in backpacks among the crowds on Boylston Street exploded 14 seconds apart. Three people were killed and hundreds injured, many seriously, including several who lost limbs. On 18 April the FBI released images of two suspects. That night the two brothers responsible killed an MIT police officer and fought a gun battle with police in Watertown, in which the elder brother died. The younger was found hiding in a boat on 19 April after a manhunt that effectively shut down the city. A federal court sentenced him to death in 2015. The attack became a symbol of the 'Boston Strong' solidarity.
