The Pulse Nightclub Attack

ClosedSources: ALast updated: 14 October 2026

In the early hours of 12 June 2016, during a 'Latin Night' at Pulse, an LGBT nightclub in Orlando, a 29-year-old gunman opened fire on the crowd. In a 911 call he pledged allegiance to the leader of ISIS, and the FBI treated the attack as terrorism. After a hostage standoff of about three hours, police stormed the club and killed him. Forty-nine people died and more than 50 were wounded; most victims were of Latino descent. It was the deadliest terrorist attack in the U.S. since 9/11 and the country's deadliest mass shooting until the 2017 Las Vegas attack. Orange County is building a permanent memorial on the site.
