STOCKHOLM — 2017 · Major Tragedy
Drottninggatan Truck Attack
At around 14:53 on 7 April 2017, a hijacked brewery truck was driven into crowds of pedestrians on Drottninggatan, Stockholm's main shopping street, before crashing into the Åhléns City department store. Five people were killed and many injured. The attacker was arrested the same day. It emerged that the 39-year-old Uzbek citizen's asylum application had been rejected, that a deportation order issued in late 2016 had not been carried out because he went into hiding, and that he sympathised with ISIS. In June 2018 a Stockholm court sentenced him to life imprisonment for terrorist offences and ordered his deportation upon release. The attack prompted debate in Sweden about the enforcement of deportation orders.
