FALUN — 1994 · Major Tragedy
The Falun Massacre
In the early hours of 11 June 1994, a 24-year-old second lieutenant stationed with the Dalregementet in Falun opened fire with his military rifle in a park in the town centre and at a nearby crossroads, killing seven people and wounding three. Five of the dead were members of the Women's Voluntary Defence Organisation (Lottakåren) on a training course; a cyclist and a security guard also died. The perpetrator, who had argued with his girlfriend and was reportedly intoxicated, was wounded in an exchange of fire with police and arrested. He was sentenced to life; the sentence was later converted to a fixed term and he was released in 2014. The attack fuelled debate in Sweden about access to weapons and military security.
