BALTIC SEA — 1994 · Major Tragedy
The MS Estonia Disaster
The ferry Estonia, sailing from Tallinn to Stockholm, sank within about an hour in stormy weather in the Baltic Sea on the night of 28 September 1994. Of the 989 people aboard, 852 died and only 137 were rescued; most victims were Swedish and Estonian. The official inquiry found that failed locks on the bow visor let water flood the car deck and the ship quickly capsized. Declaring the wreck a grave site and various claims fuelled decades of controversy; in 2020 hull damage revealed in a documentary prompted a new technical examination. It is one of Europe's worst peacetime maritime disasters.
