Murder of Wayne Lotter
South African conservationist Wayne Lotter, co-founder of the PAMS Foundation, which fought elephant poaching and ivory trafficking, was killed in Dar es Salaam's Masaki district on 16 August 2017 while travelling from the airport to his hotel. His taxi was blocked by another vehicle and two armed men opened fire. The 51-year-old had received numerous death threats over his work against international ivory networks. After a trial in which 32 witnesses testified, Tanzania's High Court on 2 December 2022 convicted 11 people, including the two gunmen, of murder and sentenced them to death. The exact motive has never been fully established.
