KOTTAYAM — 1992 · Murder
The Sister Abhaya Case
Abhaya, a 19-year-old trainee nun, was found dead in the well of the Pius X convent in Kottayam on 27 March 1992. Local police and the crime branch closed the death as a suicide, but after objections from her family and the public the file was handed to the CBI. For years the CBI itself sought to close the case, saying the perpetrators could not be identified, but courts ordered further investigation. In December 2020, 28 years after her death, a special CBI court convicted a priest and a nun of murder and sentenced them to life imprisonment. In 2022 the Kerala High Court suspended the sentences and granted them bail; the appeal is pending.
