Murder of Kateryna Handziuk
Kateryna Handziuk, an adviser to the mayor of Kherson and a civic activist who openly criticised local corruption, was attacked with acid outside her home on 31 July 2018. With burns over a large part of her body, she underwent repeated surgery in Kyiv but died on 4 November 2018, aged 33. Her death sparked wide protests in Ukraine against attacks on activists. The five men who carried out the attack received in 2019 prison terms of three to six and a half years. In June 2023 a Kyiv court sentenced the former head of the Kherson regional council, who planned the attack, and an associate to 10 years each.
