ORLÍK — 1995 · Serial Murder
The Orlík Dam Murders
In July 1995 divers discovered barrels containing human remains at the bottom of the Orlík reservoir in South Bohemia. The investigation uncovered a five-member criminal gang that operated in 1991-1993, amid the lawlessness that followed the Velvet Revolution. The gang had killed victims, mostly businessmen, for money and hid the bodies in the reservoir. The victims included a debt collector, a foreign national and the mother of one of the gang members; one member also committed a further murder on his own. Arrested in 1995, the gang members received sentences ranging from life imprisonment to ten years at the end of a four-month trial in April 1997. The case became a symbol of organised crime in 1990s Czechia.
