SANTA COMBA DÃO — 2005 · Serial Murder
The Santa Comba Dão Serial Murders
Between May 2005 and May 2006, three girls disappeared a few months apart and were found dead in the small town of Santa Comba Dão in Portugal's Viseu district. All were linked to a man who had served 25 years as a corporal in the National Republican Guard (GNR) before retiring at the end of 2004, and who had known their families since the girls were children. The Judicial Police arrested him in June 2006; he initially confessed and led investigators to one of the victims, but at trial claimed he had confessed under pressure. At his 2007 trial in Figueira da Foz he was convicted of the three murders. The case caused deep shock in the town and across Portugal.
