The Olot Care Home Murders

SolvedSources: ALast updated: 14 October 2026

Between August 2009 and October 2010, eleven elderly residents aged 80 to 96 at the La Caritat care home in Olot, province of Girona, were killed by a man working there as a care assistant. The deaths were initially recorded as natural, age-related deaths. An investigation began when an autopsy on the last victim in October 2010 revealed an unnatural death. In December 2010 the care assistant confessed responsibility for the eleven deaths. After a jury trial in Girona, the verdict was upheld by the Supreme Court in 2014, with a total sentence of 127 years and 6 months. The case raised questions about oversight in care institutions.
