The Putten Murder and Its Miscarriages of Justice

ClosedSources: ALast updated: 14 October 2026

On 9 January 1994 a 23-year-old flight attendant was found dead at her grandmother's house in Putten. In 1995 two young men were sentenced to ten years for the murder, although the DNA traces at the scene did not match them. After a long public campaign the Supreme Court ordered a retrial and both men were acquitted in 2002, making the case one of the best-known miscarriages of justice in the Netherlands. In 2008 a new suspect was arrested after a DNA match and received 18 years on appeal. That conviction is itself disputed: a request for review surfaced in 2018 and the case is still debated.
