A Kadifekale Killing Lost to the Statute of Limitations
In 2003 a man identified as S.İ. was beaten to death by unknown assailants in the Kadifekale area of Konak, İzmir. The investigation failed to identify any perpetrator and the file sat unsolved for years. In October 2023 the statute of limitations expired; according to Yeni Asır, even if the killer were caught now, prosecution would no longer be possible. The case has been cited in debates on how limitation periods for serious crimes affect unsolved files in Turkey, and it appeared again in the 2026 list of İzmir's unsolved murders.
