Kıdrak Beach: The Attack on the Ambassador's Family
On 30 September 1978 Verena Laube, wife of the Austrian ambassador, and her daughter were attacked with a hunting shotgun while picnicking on Kıdrak Beach near Fethiye. The mother died at the scene and the daughter in hospital; a young relative with them fought off the attacker and escaped. The gunman, a local barber, was quickly arrested. On 3 November 1978 the Fethiye High Criminal Court sentenced him to death twice; the sentence was upheld and carried out in Isparta on 20 April 1983. The case drew wide attention in Turkish–Austrian relations and debates on tourist safety.
