ANGARSK — 1992 · Serial Murder
The "Angarsk Maniac" Case
Between 1992 and 2011, many women were killed in the Siberian city of Angarsk and the wider Irkutsk region. The perpetrator, dubbed the "Angarsk Maniac" by the press, was a serving police officer during much of the period and often approached victims by offering them a lift home. Identified through DNA and arrested in 2012, the former officer was sentenced to life imprisonment for 22 murders in 2015. In December 2018 he was convicted of 56 more murders and given a second life sentence. With further trials in later years, the number of murders he has been convicted of exceeded 80. It is one of the largest serial murder cases in Russia's modern history.
