BAIYIN — 1988 · Serial Murder
Baiyin Serial Murders
Between 1988 and 2002, 11 women and girls were murdered in the city of Baiyin in China's Gansu province, and once in Baotou, Inner Mongolia. The killings spread fear for years and were dubbed the work of "China's Jack the Ripper". The case was solved in 2016 when a man whose DNA was taken over a minor offence proved to be related to the killer; police traced the link to a grocery shop owner and confirmed his DNA. He confessed, was sentenced to death in 2018 and executed on 3 January 2019. It became one of China's best-known cases solved through familial DNA.
