HENAN — 2003 · Serial Murder
The Four-Province Serial Murders (2000-2003)
A series of murders committed between September 2000 and August 2003 in China's Henan, Anhui, Hebei and Shandong provinces, mostly by entering the homes of rural farming families at night. The perpetrator, an itinerant labourer with previous convictions for theft and sexual assault, was detained on suspicion in Cangzhou, Hebei, on 3 November 2003 and confessed to 67 murders. The Luohe Intermediate People's Court in Henan sentenced him to death on 1 February 2004, and he was executed on 14 February 2004. Recorded as the case with the most victims of any known serial killer in China since 1949, it sparked debate about poor police coordination in rural areas.
